There’s a lot of Death Metal out there. Some of it is fantastic. Some of it is just your basic Death Metal. And then there’s some real noisy garbage.

When Death Metal is fantastic, it really tickles my fucking pickle. I don’t come across that many that truly make me feel that way. Thankfully, I’m here to tell you about a band that really does it right.

Gruesome. I remember hearing some of their 2015 debut and really liking it. I just forgot to dig deeper into it. When I got the news that they were putting out another album, I was quickly reminded that they were what I’d been looking for in the genre.

Straight out of the 1987-1993 book, with just a step above in production to match, this is what it’s supposed to sound like. Death, Possessed, Autopsy, Exhumed, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse… Gruesome follows right in line. As they should, because it features members of a couple of those bands. The intention was to capture that era, and it’s really refreshing, without sounding dated.

Snarly growl vocals that you can understand. Just slightly melodic, yet filthy grimey thrash riffs. Mindful solos that aren’t just shred heavy. The notes actually matter here. Lyrics that match the music. It’s the total package of what classic Death Metal is.

Buy it. Listen to it. Enjoy it. That’s really all there is to it.

Rating? 4/5
